Heavy Metals Found in Makeup

Metal makeup? The Canadian-based Environmental Defence recently discovered that there are metals in cosmetics.

The Environmental Defence, a Canadian environmental action organization, recently tested the makeup bags of 6 women with 49 makeup items chosen that included foundations, concealers, powders, blushes, mascaras, eyeliners, eye shadows, and lipsticks.  The Canadian fund discovered that that many products, even those manufactured by top brands like L’Oreal, Too Faced, and Clinique, contained lead, cobalt, nickel, chromium, and arsenic. According to the fund, this is particularly alarming since arsenic and cadmium are considered carcinogens. However, some studies have concluded that these elements can be absorbed through skin but are harmful when they are inhaled or ingested. Either way – reading that makeup contains chemicals and metals is eye opening and shocking (to say the least) to learn just how misleading and dishonest labeling and the manufactures themselves actually are.

Becoming an educated and aware consumer is the only way to make the best chooses for your skin. Here are some tips by The Environmental Defence to be aware of when purchasing makeup and skincare products:

1. CHOOSE SAFER PRODUCTS.
Visit www.environmentaldefence.ca and www.safecosmetics.org to help learn more about safe and chemical-free products.

2. LESS IS BETTER.
Try to use makeup less often.

3. HELP PASS SMARTER, HEALTH-PROTECTIVE LAWS.
There are no regulations on skincare products. There is a proposed US Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 will ensure that all cosmetics will have to labeled. To learn more about this, please visit: http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h5786/show.

4) DEMAND THAT COSMETICS COMPANIES FULLY DISCLOSE INGREDIENTS AND SUPPORT THOSE THAT DO.
Tell cosmetics companies that you want them to fully disclose the ingredients in the products they make – including impurities. You can find companies’ toll-free customer hotlines on product packages and online, and calling them only takes a moment.
