The maternity leave – or lack thereof – in this country is disturbing. When I had M I quit my job – not only because a nanny would be making more than I would but also because it seemed too hard to go back after 3 months. Prior to quitting, though my maternity leave wasn’t a complete joy. Although I was in complete awe of my new daughter there was a new worry – a financial one. Since maternity leave isn’t paid, I used some vacation time and basically lived off my husband’s income until I figured out a new plan.
Many new moms don’t have a choice when it comes to leave and often go back to work in about 12 weeks. A shocking new infograph from http://www.takepart.com shows how countries like Malta and Sweden have PAID maternity leave and even paternity for fathers. As stated in the inforgraph since American mothers do not have paid leave they are less likely to breastfeed and have children with behavioral problems. What do you think? What is the solution?
